Camp Kesem at University of Arkansas
Camp Kesem is a nationwide community, driven by passionate college student leaders, that supports children through and beyond their parent’s cancer. Camp Kesem is the largest national organization dedicated to this unique population – supporting children with innovative, fun-filled programs that foster a lasting community. Kesem’s flagship program is called Camp Kesem. Camp Kesem is a free week long camp for children, ages six to eighteen, that have been affected by a parent’s cancer. This program served over 7,000 children across the country in 2017 and is the most impactful program provided by Kesem. Kesem has six other programs throughout the year to provide year round support for these families. These programs range from Family and Friends Reunion days to Kesem by Your Side for any of the harder days that are experienced due the situation these children are faced with. Camp Kesem at University of Arkansas is one of over 100 chapters on different college campuses. Camp Kesem at University of Arkansas was established in 2015, and will be completing our third year of camp this upcoming summer. Our first year we were able to change the lives of 20 campers, last summer we had 37 campers in attendance and this year we have a goal of over 60 campers. In order to send this many children to camp, the college student leaders at Arkansas must raise over $65,000. This money comes from individual fundraising, grants, our charity gala called Make the Magic, and different community sponsors. Camp Kesem is open to children ages 6-18 who have been affected by a parent or guardian’s cancer. It is completely free of charge.
