Did life imitate art or did art imitate life at the Smith Opera House in 1977?
In 1977, the future of The Smith (named the Geneva Theatre at that time) looked bleak. The theatre was facing numerous costly issues and the interior was far from its 1931 glory when it re-opened as the newly built Schine’s Geneva Theatre. The decaying Smith was the ideal site for a film about a dilapidated movie house facing imminent destruction. Rochester filmmakers Joe and Debbie Janowicz shot The Final Show mere months before the Smith itself was almost lost forever.
